AIM

This course is intended to provide participants a broad overview of maritime law and will examine the various conventional shipping contracts with their rights, obligations and associated costs arising from these arrangements. The course is suitable for anyone who is new to the shipping industry.

 

OBJECTIVE OF COURSE

On successful completion, the participants shall be able to:

 

  • Explain the basic international laws that are in place governing maritime trade

  • Discuss the legal characteristics and commercial usages of a time and voyage charter party

  • Describe the operational factors involved with shipping contracts

  • Calculate and explain the total capital that is needed for a voyage as well as the various expenses that has to be paid to maintain a voyage.

  • Explain the essential terms and obligations of demise charter, time charter, voyage charter and contracts of affreightment (COA)

  • Describe the important terms/clauses that are included in the voyage charter party for dry bulk and tankers

  • Identify and explain the vital components that needs to be negotiated when negotiating a charter party contract

  • Discuss the functions and obligations of the Bill of Lading and the role it plays in international sale transactions

  • Explain the concept of multimodal transport and the contracts that are associated with it

  • State the definition of cargo liability regimes and describe the various international conventions for the carriage of cargo by sea and the application of their rules
