AIM

The aim of the BRM Course is to focus on positive attitude change leading to behavioral dynamics that reduces management error. It sharpens the skill of naval personnel in the use and coordination of knowledge, experiences and available resources to achieve a high standard of safe naval operations at sea.

 

OBJECTIVE OF COURSE

The BRM Course aims to achieve a specific behavioral objective, which describes recommended behavior in a particular situation. Each module has its specified objective.

 

COVERAGE OF BRM COURSE

The BRM course is divided into fourteen modules encompassing the entire spectrum of human behaviour relating to the Maritime environment.

 

The modules are as follows:

  • Attitude and Management

  • Cultural Awareness

  • Communication and Briefings

  • Challenge and Response

  • Short Term Strategy

  • Authority and Assertiveness

  • Management Style

  • Workload

  • State of Bridge

  • Human Involvement In Error

  • Judgment and Decision making

  • Emergency and Leadership

  • Crisis and Crowd control

  • Automation Awareness

TRAINING METHODOLOGY

The course is modeled around Computer Based Training (CBT) coupled with case studies and situation analysis during which the trainee’s confrontation with others and own attitudes and opinions. This course is compliant with SAS FA course model.

 

(a) Computer-based Training (CBT)

Theoretical knowledge is covered via CBT, which provides specially designed illustrations to highlight fundamental knowledge and information. The CBT program also contains scripted examples of good and bad management situations and a self-test module to validate learning experience. Through selfpaced learning processes, the participants learn the basic facts about human behavior and interactions.

 

(b) Workshops

Group discussions are held to reinforce learning through the sharing of ideas and experience. A qualified facilitator conducts the session to enable peer learning to harness collective knowledge and experience so as to enrich the individual participant.

 

(c) Case Studies

Case method instruction is widely used to allow participants to learn from the mistakes and misfortunes of others. Well-documented real life accidents and incidents are analyzed to reinforce lessons learnt.

 

(d) Simulator

For reinforcement, the trainees are exposed to an application case or scenario case in a simulator or in a mock-up environment after the theoretical portion.

 

CERTIFICATION: Certificates endorsed by MPA, SAS FA and STET Maritime will be issued to participants upon successful completion of the BRM Course.
